The predecessor of China Institute of Interior Design (CIID) is China Institute of Interior Architects. Since its establishment in 1989, CIID has been the only authorized academic institution in the field of interior design in China。

CIID aims to unite interior architects of the whole country, raise the theoretical and practical level of China's interior design industry, pioneer the Chinese characteristics of interior design, help interior architects play their social role, preserve the rights and interests of interior architects, foster professional exchanges and cooperation with international peers, so as to serve and facilitate the construction of China's modernization.

Since the foundation 20 years ago, CIID hold abundant and colorful academic exchanges every year, building a platform for designers to communicate and to study meanwhile update designer information of design industry, related competitions and business promotion, to enhance the better and rapid development of interior design industry of China.

Members of CIID are composed of individual members (including student members, associate members, full members, advanced members, foreign members) and group members. By now, CIID has a large membership of more than ten thousands prominent designers who are from all over the country and passed the strict assessment by CIID.  

Every year CIID will organize various types of competitions which include Institute Award of China Interior Design Award, Influential People of China Interior Design, “Renewal Design” Original Competition, National-level Interior Design Competition for Young Students, China Hand-drawn Art Design Competition and so on.

CIID Secretarial is located in Beijing, taking the charge of work in institute. CIID secretariat publishes membership periodical china interior, Collection of Entries of China Interior Design Competition, periodical Ornament and Decoration World, Home Adornments, ID+C.
